BIA DIGITAL PARTNERS FUNDS TRILLION DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS
Investment Funds Broadband Infrastructure Buildout
(Chantilly, VA August 16, 2002) - BIA Digital Partners LP (the "Fund") announced today it has invested $4.0 million to provide growth capital for Trillion Digital Communications, Inc., a provider of broadband communications and connectivity services to primarily rural markets in the southeastern United States. BIA Digital Partners' investment will fund the capital expenditures needed to build out approximately 200 new customers and establish the sales and marketing organization in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Trillion provides high speed, high bandwidth services primarily to the commercial, educational and municipal markets. Headquartered in Bessemer, Alabama with 48 employees, Trillion currently provides service to almost 400 customers in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.
BIA Digital Partners' investment takes the form of senior subordinated notes with warrants. Trillion secured $8.2 million in preferred equity in December 2001, primarily from Cygnet Capital and Jemison Partners, recapitalizing the company and expanding Trillion's point-to-point network to 2,000 miles.
"It is a difficult funding environment for the communications industry, so we consider it a great advantage to have worked with Scott Chappell and Lloyd Sams at BIA Digital Partners who bring both capital and ideas for the future of our business. Their long experience in this industry gave them insight other groups may not have had," according to Trillion CEO Terry Johnson.
Lloyd Sams, BIA Digital Partners' Principal, has been appointed to Trillion's Board. "We were impressed with the experience and vision of Trillion's CEO and management team. This investment allows them to leverage their competitive advantages and realize rapid expansion throughout the southeastern United States. It is also indicative of our ability to uncover excellent middle market companies, structure a transaction that makes sense for the company and for BIA Digital Partners, and close the transaction," said Sams.
